Research activity
My research centres on music production, composition and film post-production sound, focusing on how emerging technologies reshape practice. I'm currently exploring generative AI integration in songwriting and production workflows – specifically testing where these tools hit their limits and where they genuinely enhance human expression. Most of my research happens within post-punk and indie folk contexts, which gives me concrete genres to test ideas against.

What do you enjoy about teaching/your job?
I love learning, and teaching forces you to learn things to a breadth and depth you might not otherwise reach. Through postgraduate supervision, I get to see the processes of some very talented people and learn from them. What I find most rewarding is watching students transform from tentative beginners to confident practitioners who can navigate both the technical and artistic sides of what we do.
What do you love about your area?
Media Arts brings together people from everywhere—film buffs, theatre kids, musicians, visual artists, writers — and somehow it all works. The field moves fast enough that last year's cutting-edge technique becomes this year's standard workflow. What I love is that you're always learning, whether it's a new plugin, a different approach to narrative structure, or watching a student solve a problem in a way that makes you rethink everything.
Tell us about your experience in the industry
My practice runs parallel to my teaching – I release music as J Harry Long (16 million streams and counting), handle post-production and sound design for independent films and mix music for artists including Matthew Banister and Sneaky Feelings. As a singer I've appeared in several music theatre productions. All of this feeds directly back into the classroom.
What keeps you busy outside of Media Arts?
When I'm not in the studio or classroom, you'll find me on the football pitch staying fit, exploring new destinations through travel, or in my garage building guitars.
