Dive into the diverse and fast-growing world of mechanical engineering. This highly practical, hands-on course will prepare you for work, an apprenticeship, or further education.
In this year-long introductory course, you will develop core engineering, mechanical, and fabrication skills. Learn the foundations of mechanical trades and how to safely use steel or plastics to create and maintain equipment across a diverse range of industries.
Our industry-expert tutors will guide you throughout your journey in a supportive environment. We see our graduates work across a range of exciting sectors, including manufacturing, aviation, energy, boating, and many more.

The course is designed to give you foundational knowledge, skills, and confidence. If you are looking to become a fully qualified tradesperson, the next step is to complete an apprenticeship. Long-term, after the completion of your apprenticeship, there are further opportunities to study at a higher level. There are many different job opportunities for you to pursue in many industries, such as manufacturing, aviation, construction, and energy.

Applicants who do not meet any of the entry options stated above, and think they have what it takes to complete this programme, can apply for ‘Discretionary Entrance’. The application is based on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate a likelihood to succeed in the programme. The decision is at the discretion of the Head of School/Centre Director or their delegate. The ability to progress into further study depends on how successful the applicant is within the programme they apply and are accepted into under ‘Discretionary Entrance’
Selection Criteria
All applications will be reviewed to ensure eligibility for entry.
Limitations may be imposed on admissions and enrolment. Where there are more ākonga than places available, ākonga will be selected based on the order of their applications being received.
English Language Requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5; or equivalent.
