1. Describe basic nutrition principles to support healthy lifestyles and training for a diverse range of individuals. 2. Apply basic knowledge of healthy lifestyle behaviour change for a diverse range of individuals. 3. Use a Maori Health Model to explain the benefits of effective exercise programmes for a diverse range of individuals.

• Introduction to nutrition and the current nutrition environment • Healthy eating guidelines and food sources of nutrients • Meal planning, food shopping and label reading • Digestive system • Macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats and protein • Micronutrients: vitamins and minerals • Water and alcohol • Dietary assessment • Energy balance and weight management • Popular diets and evaluating nutrition information • Socio-economic considerations • Sustainability and nutrition • External influences (media, travelling, culture, society) • Trans-theoretical model for behaviour change • Motivational interviewing • Cultural competency • Socio-economic considerations • Scope of practice •Components of Te Whare Tapa Wha as the four cornerstones of Maori health Taha Tinana (physical health) Taha Wairua (spiritual health) Taha Whanau (family health) Taha Hinengaro (mental health) •Components of Te Wheke Te whanau – the family Waiora – total wellbeing for the individual and family Wairuatanga – spirituality Hinengaro – the mind Taha tinana – physical wellbeing Whanaungatanga – extended family Mauri – life force in people and objects Mana ake – unique identity of individuals and family Ha a koro ma, a kui ma – breath of life from forbearers Whatumanawa – the open and healthy expression of emotion •Components of Te Pae Mahutonga and how these bring together elements of modern health promotion Mauriora (cultural identity) Waiora (physical environment) Toiora (healthy lifestyles) Te Oranga (participation in society) •Examples of how health models contribute to helping individuals achieve their fitness goals
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this course is achievement-based. Aakonga must submit all specified assessment items, achieve all learning outcomes, and obtain at least 50% overall in order to pass this course.

Learning and teaching activities will employ a range of elements drawn from approved methods to align with the context of the learning (delivery mode, regional specific requirement, etc.) and any particular needs of the group of aakonga.
