- Identification and differentiation of microorganisms - Inoculation of media without contamination or production of aerosols - Enumeration methods for microorganisms - Food, water quality and industrial microbes of interest - Factors affecting bacterial growth - Culturing bacteria under a variety of conditions - Where applicable, tikanga relating collection and disposal of samples from the taiao - Traditional and molecular microbiology methods - Sterilisation and disinfection

Learning Outcomes
LO1 Identify and differentiate microorganisms in an applied science work related environment. LO2 Perform bacterial enumeration, identification and reporting in an applied science work related environment. LO3 Describe bacterial cultivation and growth, and methods used to control microbial growth.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this course supports both achievement and competency-based assessment. Competency-based course completion: Akonga must successfully complete all specified assessment items in order to pass this course. Achievement based course completion: Akonga must submit all specified assessment items, achieve all learning outcomes, and obtain at least 50% overall in order to pass this course.
